Thousands of protesters filled the streets of Kolkata on the night of September 8, marking one month since the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This significant outpouring of public emotion coincided with the Supreme Court’s scheduled hearing on the case, which took place on September 9.

The protests, part of the “Reclaim the Night” initiative, were organized by activists and concerned citizens who aimed to raise awareness about women’s safety and demand justice for the victim. This was the third major protest since the incident, following earlier demonstrations on August 14 and September 4. Protesters gathered in various locations across the city, forming human chains and engaging in peaceful vigils to emphasize their call for justice and accountability from the authorities.

Prominent figures in academia and activism, including historian Dipesh Chakrabarty and economist Jean Dreze, have lent their support to the movement, helping to mentor and guide the protesters in their demands for long-term policy changes regarding women’s safety. The organizers encouraged participants to bring musical instruments to create a vibrant atmosphere, likening their efforts to a cultural awakening aimed at rousing those in power from complacency.

In addition to local protests, demonstrations were reported globally, with events taking place in 130 cities across 25 countries. This international solidarity highlighted the widespread concern over women’s safety and the need for systemic change in response to gender-based violence.

The Supreme Court’s hearing on September 9 was anticipated to address the progress of the investigation, which has faced criticism for alleged mishandling and lack of transparency. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has reportedly narrowed down its focus to a single suspect, Sanjay Roy, and is expected to submit a report to the Calcutta High Court later this month.

As the protests unfolded, many citizens expressed their frustration with the West Bengal government’s handling of the case, calling for accountability and justice. The emotional weight of the past month has galvanized a community determined to reclaim their streets and advocate for a safer environment for women in Kolkata and beyond.
