Emerging Covid Variant Raises Concerns: Scientists Warn It Could Soon Become Dominant

A new Covid variant, XEC, has been detected in several countries, including the UK, US, and Germany. According to scientists, this variant has some new mutations that could help it spread more easily this autumn.

Although vaccines are still effective in preventing severe cases, experts say that XEC could become the dominant type of Covid over the winter. The NHS is offering free booster shots to those who are more likely to become seriously ill from Covid.

Symptoms of XEC Covid are thought to be similar to those of previous variants, including a high temperature, aches, tiredness, and a cough or sore throat. Most people recover from Covid within a few weeks, but it can take longer for some.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says that it’s normal for viruses to mutate and change over time. They are monitoring the situation closely and urge those who are eligible for a free booster vaccine to come forward.

The main vaccination drive for flu and Covid will start in October, but some may receive their shots earlier. The vaccines have been updated to better match recent variants, although not XEC.

Experts believe that XEC is “just getting started” and it will take several weeks or months for it to become widespread. In the meantime, people can take precautions to prevent the spread of Covid, such as getting vaccinated and following public health guidelines.
