New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal submitted his resignation to Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena on September 17, 2024, paving the way for the appointment of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi as the new Chief Minister of Delhi.

According to sources, Kejriwal met Saxena at 4:30 p.m. and tendered his resignation, which was accepted by AAP legislators in a meeting at Kejriwal’s residence. The decision was reportedly unanimous, with all MLAs agreeing to support Atishi as the new Chief Minister.

Kejriwal had announced his plan to resign on September 15, 2024, just two days after being released from prison. He had called for an early assembly election, claiming that he wanted the people of Delhi to decide whether the AAP government was honest or not.

In a statement, Kejriwal said that he would also take his case to the people’s court, stating that if they approved his honesty in an election, he would return as Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia echoed Kejriwal’s sentiments, saying that along with Kejriwal, he too would go to the people’s court and seek their approval.

The developments came as a surprise to many, especially given the recent political upheaval in Delhi. The AAP government had been facing opposition from the BJP and other parties, leading to increased tensions in the state.
